Back Forty Beer Company has been awarded a silver medal for their Truck Stop Honey Brown Ale at the 2010 Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO. This is the second year that the Gadsden, AL based operation has entered the competition and the first year entering Truck Stop Honey Brown Ale.
This annual competition is the largest beer judging and tasting event in the World, attracting an estimated 50,000 attendees in 2010. This years festival featured 3,594 beers entered by 522 breweries from 48 States.
Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are awarded in 79 style categories by 150 judges representing 9 countries from around the world. The judges are not required to award medals in each style category.
The judges criteria for awarding medals are as follows:
Gold – A world-class beer that accurately exemplifies the specified style, displaying the proper balance of taste, aroma and appearance.
Silver – An excellent beer that may vary slightly from style parameters while maintaining close adherence to the style and displaying excellent taste, aroma and appearance.
Bronze – A fine example of the style that may vary slightly with style parameters and/or have minor deviations in taste, aroma or appearance.
Truck Stop Honey Brown Ale was awarded the Silver Medal in the Specialty Honey Beer Category (#9). This is the first medal for Back Forty Beer Company since beginning operations in June of 2009.
The Gold Medal in this category was awarded to Blue Moon Brewing Company of Denver, CO for their Blue Moon Summer Honey Wheat Ale
The Bronze Medal in this category was awarded to Boston Beer Company of Boston MA for their Sam Adams Honey Porter.
